Trimming black nails safely

On black nails you cannot see the quick, the pink part with the blood supply. Trim a little at a time and look at the cut end: when you see a dark dot in the middle, stop.

Shine a phone torch under the nail if your dog is calm enough. If you do nick the quick, press styptic powder on it until the bleeding stops.
